Proverbs are everywhere!
They are short and memorable sayings that provide insight and instruction to anyone who is willing to hear.
If someone is walking around in a fog or distracted, you might say, “Wake up and smell the coffee.” When someone is disorganized you quip, “Get your ducks in a row”, and when they are crumbling under pressure you tell them, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”
Proverbs are a part of our life. And they are a part of our Bible.
The Bible is the cosmic story of how God has worked in the world, in history, and through His Son to save a people for Himself. And within that cosmic story there was a moment when the Holy Spirit inspired an elderly King Solomon to give wisdom to his children, so that all of God’s children can live wisely in the here and now.
The book of Proverbs shows that the Bible cares about both eternal matters that deal with Heaven and Hell, and temporal matters that we engage with everyday. In a world where there are voices screaming at us from every angle about what is good, true and beautiful, Proverbs provides the still small voice of Lady Wisdom to teach us what is generally (but not always) true, so that those who are willing to listen can live the good life here and now.
We will be spending the next few weeks looking at what some of these proverbial sayings have to teach us about the good, the true, and the beautiful. Because if we listen to Lady Wisdom, our lives will go well.
Which is actually a kind of proverb in itself.
