- The Sovereignty of God / The Doctrine of Election
Thank you for clarifying the doctrine of election. I too wish that all would chose correctly and that all were chosen. However, the traditional and historical interpretations of Scripture must be accepted, since it would be unfair if they were incorrect, and inconsistent with Christ’s promise to build His church. (Although we must recognize that since God is sovereign He does not have to be fair by our standards, and can do whatever He wants). Furthermore, since Christ did not come to save all we accept the reality that the majority of individuals who have been born will have eternal punishment: forever and forever and forever and forever and forever and forever and forever and forever and forever and forever without end for a trillion times a trillion years. While this might pain us and also seem unfair, we realize that this is just an emotional reaction, and that questioning God’s plan is akin to rebellion. Jesus’ concern for the poor while he was on earth may have been more of a temporal arrangement, and will be less of an issue in eternity where most of the suffering will occur, unfortunately primarily by people who were the poor and downtrodden while on earth. However, we continue to worship God because He knows all and is gentle and loving, but also is just and holy. And even though all but the most reprehensible would consider it abusive to tell vulnerable children that if they keep on disobeying they will be abandoned and made to suffer forever and forever with no chance of reconciliation, we remind ourselves that God is sovereign and a different kind of father. And that behavior has logical consequences and it is not really God doing the separating, but sin which unfortunately results in most not being part of the elect. Any emotional damage done by our message will be nothing compared to the bliss of eternal life for those who have chosen and/or have been chosen. My last post. I promise by human standards.
