It seems to me that 1 Cor. 11:27 ff. is not so much about making things right with someone whom you have an unresolved conflict or have had a falling out (important as those matters are), but it is precisely about not participating in the Lord’s table unworthily. In the context of the passage, unworthy participation in the Lord’s Supper means treating some believers with partiality, contempt or as second-class Christians. It means being blindly unaware of the needs and circumstances of one’s fellow believers to the point of exclusion from the inner circle of fellowship. This kind of attitude clearly violates the meaning of communion which symbolizes the coo on ground of coming together around the memory of Jesus’ death and resurrection. That is the unifying theme – the levelling of the “playing field,” so to speak. So self examination before communion is for the purpose of determining if there is any residue of superiority or partiality clinging to my heart which prevents me from enjoying fellowship with all who gather at the table.
My first comment has a spelling mistake on the fifth line from the end. It should say “common ground” not “coo on ground.”
